Interlibrary loans
Books, journal articles, and audio-visual resources can be obtained from libraries and other relevant organisations throughout Australia.
Reciprocal borrowing rights
Great Southern TAFE students are entitled to borrow resources from other TAFE college libraries in Western Australia, and from Murdoch and Edith Cowan University libraries.
Students wishing to borrow directly from these libraries need to obtain a reciprocal borrower’s card from the GSTAFE Library. This card, together with the student’s enrolment form, must be presented before borrowing rights are accorded.
Loans
Students are entitled to borrow a total of 6 items at any one time. Most resources can be borrowed for a period of 3 weeks; a different loan period applies to resources which are in high demand.
Items on loan may be renewed once, either over the phone, on-line via the Library catalogue, or at the Library.
Reservations
Students can reserve items on loan either directly by accessing the online catalogue, or by asking a member of the Library staff to place a hold on the required item. Students are contacted when the resource becomes available.
Computer facilities
Pentium computers with CD-ROM drives and a range of software including Windows XP and Office 2003 are available for student use. The computers provide access to the Internet, on-line databases and email. Printers and scanners are also available.
Photocopying
A photocopier is available for student use at 10c per A4 copy. The copier is coin-operated, and a change machine is also available.
Study facilities
Study carrels, discussion tables and lounge chairs are all available at the Library.
The sound-proofed Group Study Room is also available for use by students, particularly for group discussions or for the use of Audio-visual resources. DVD and video players are available in this room.
Height-adjustable desks are available at the catalogues, computers, private study tables, and in the Computer Laboratory.
Zoomtext print enlarging software is available.
How to enroll
All students enrolled at Great Southern TAFE are eligible to join the Library Resource Centre.
Students must bring their enrolment form endorsed with the fee receipt to the Issue Desk at the Library where they will be issued with a Library card. This card will allow students remote access to General OneFile. It will also allow students to renew, and to place reservations on, resources on loan.

Use of the photocopier is primarily for students. Staff can make small amounts of photocopying on this machine, but multiple copies are to be done on departmental copiers, or through the college copying service.
Lecturers can authorize the use of the copier key by students. Authorisation slips are available in all college departments, or at the Library. Copies must be recorded and will be charged to the relevant department.

Journal articles and lecturers’ personal resources can be placed in this separate Collection. Selected books, videos and DVD’s which are in high demand can also be given a restricted loan status.
Bibliographies
Lists of selected library resources in any given subject area can be prepared for distribution to students at a lecturer’s request.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks are available for distribution to students. These list GSTAFE Library’s shelf locations by Dewey number, journals subscribed to, and a selection of relevant web addresses, for any given subject.
Journal circulation service
The most recent copy of journals purchased by the Library in support of educational programs is made available to staff before being placed in the library. A list of journals available for circulation can be obtained from the Library. Staff can only request circulation of journals relevant to their professional area.
This service is also available to regional staff.
Audio-visual services
Under a special scheme with Screenrights, the College can legally record any TV or radio broadcasts required in support of teaching programs. Staff can subscribe to the weekly online Enhance TV service to receive a complete program of forthcoming transmissions. This service
also provides online study guides. For information about this service contact the Library Technician on 98928860.

Similarly, the Computer Laboratory (refer Computer facilities above) is also available for class bookings.
Height-adjustable desks are available at the catalogues, computers, private study tables, and in the Computer Laboratory.
Collection development and maintenance
The Library Resource Centre has a budget allocation for every broad subject area taught at the college. Lecturers are urged to participate in the selection of learning resources for their particular subject areas. Other staff are also encouraged to contribute to the selection of resources relevant to their professional information needs.
It is College policy that all resources purchased with departmental funds for location and use in departments must be sent to the Library for cataloguing and addition to the online catalogue.
This process prevents unnecessary duplication of resources, facilitates resource sharing, and assists proper resource management.
Regional assistance
Regional staff are encouraged to visit the Library Resource Centre to discuss their information and resource requirements. Personal demonstration of and assistance with the use of online facilities can also be arranged. Staff are encouraged to attend the special Library information sessions held in the regions.
